Lesson 60-PB Inspired Candles

I fell in love with these candles the first time I saw them in the PB store. However I didn't love the price. It was a relationship that was never meant to be. But I just couldn't get them out of my mind. I quickly realized these would be easy enough to re-create with a much friendlier price tag.

I already had the burlap and spray adhesive from other projects and bought two white-ish candle for $2.00 at Goodwill. They weren't in the best of condition, but I didn't care, knowing they would soon have their imperfections covered with burlap.

They now reside on a corner of our bathtub in our master bathroom. I think they look just as good as the ones from Pottery Barn and only cost me a total of $4.00. Can't get much better than that!!!

This post could also be called: Lesson 60-Why I Shouldn't Be Allowed to Use Spray Adhesive. My two adhesive loves are my trusty glue gun or Mod Podge. I have been in a committed relationship with both products for a sizeable portion of my life. They have never let me down (glue gun burns are quickly forgiven). But spray adhesive was a necessary requirement for another project and so I bought my first bottle. The original product was quick and simple and didn't require much contact between my hands and the adhesive. This project was a totally different situation. While rolling the fabric around the candle getting it to stick to the candle after spraying, I got a lot of the adhesive of my hands. They were so STICKY! I tried everything I could think of: warm soapy water, dish detergent. I even had Husband scrub them with a sponge. The stickiness wouldn't budge!!! Which I suppose is a good thing, since that's what it's purpose is, but not on my hands. Luckily we were already planning on heading to the in-laws and my MIL poured some Goo Gone on my hands upon my arrival. After rubbing it in my hands for several minutes I was no longer plagued with sticky fingers!!! So please be careful my friends when using the spray adhesive. As for me, I think I'll be returning to my first two favorite adhesives for a while.

Warning: Due to the highly flammable nature of Elmer's spray adhesive, using it on candles change the nature of these to 'for decoration'. Lighting them could be very dangerous!!!

  3. Just a thought...could you warm the wax slightly with a lighter and adhere the burlap a little at a time as you roll it? That would probably be a safe solution.

Sorry, I'm always trying to figure things out!

  4. Thanks!

@Life in Rehab--that's a really good idea. I'm thinking I need another candle that's a bit shorter than the other two so maybe I'll forgo the sticky fingers and try melting the burlap on instead. I'll keep you posted!

  8. Wow, they turned out really great. You gotta love pottery barn. I get a lot of inspiration for my own projects from their cataloge. Another adhesive that works good in lots of projects is Matte Gel Medium from the art supply department at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. There are several types of Matte Gel Medium, the heavier textured one works well for adhering these types of projects. Thanks for sharing!
